Wenger: Arsenal lost too many tackles
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger felt his players lacked commitment in tackles during the 4-0 defeat to Southampton.

Wenger's men missed the chance to go top of the Premier League on Saturday as they were undone by a Shane Long brace and further goals from Cuco Martina and Jose Fonte.

After beating Manchester City 2-0 on Monday the Gunners were tipped to go on and win the title, but showed a lack of mettle at St Mary's

"I don't much take too much notice of the scoreline in my consideration but we lost too many challenges, they were sharper than us," he told BT Sport.

"We were unlucky on the first one [goal]. The first shot on goal from the right-back [Martina] goes in the top corner.

"The second one was a foul on [Laurent] Koscielny and that was the turning point but the referee didn't see it, then we were exposed on counter-attacks.

"It's a disappointing result but I have to say well done to Southampton.

"In many challenges we were second best. The referee let a lot go as well but when you're not dominant that's the price you pay."

Surprise leaders Leicester City remain two points clear despite their defeat to Liverpool earlier on Saturday, with City's 4-1 win over Sunderland moving them just a point behind Arsenal.

Asked about the unpredictable nature of this season's Premier League, Wenger added: "I said many times it's down to consistency to fight in every game and find the resources to produce top-level performances.

"[It] was a very, very physical game and this team [Southampton] fights for their life - as long as we couldn't score the first goal you could see it would be a difficult game."

Klopp: Liverpool goal was brilliant
Jurgen Klopp praised the quality of the goal Liverpool scored in their 1-0 Premier League win over Leicester City at Anfield.

The home side dominated the opening stages but it was not until the 63rd minute that they finally broke the deadlock, with Christian Benteke slotting home Roberto Firmino's cross.

Klopp was delighted to see an end to Liverpool's four-game run without a victory in all competitions and felt his side handled the opposition and blustery conditions very well.

"After four games with no result, that was very important today," he said.

"Everybody knows of the quality of Leicester and what we had to do today was play simple football.

"We made the goal, brilliant situation where the boys showed their quality in small situations. We were never really under pressure."

Benteke - who came off the bench for the injured Divock Origi - missed a glorious chance for a second in the closing moments as he failed to convert from close range with Kasper Schmeichel out of his goal, but Klopp was nonetheless thrilled with his impact.

"The first half was really good and then we had to change. Christian Benteke was not warm, it's not easy to come into the game," he said.

"We had one of the biggest chances ever late on, six versus one I think and no goalkeeper and then the ball was in our box."

Klopp confirmed Origi has picked up a hamstring problem, adding: "Hamstring is the s*** word for me this year."

'Arsenal couldn't cope with our pace'
Pace was the key to Southampton's 4-0 win over Arsenal, according to two-goal hero Shane Long.
Arsene Wenger's side came into the match after a 2-1 win against Premier League title rivals
Manchester City, but a woeful defensive display resulted in a resounding defeat at St Mary's Stadium.

Long scored twice and hit the post as Southampton ended a five-game winless run in the top flight and the Irishman felt Arsenal had no response to the speed within his team's ranks.

"We caused them problems on the break and they did not like the pace in behind from me and Sadio [Mane] and we played on that," Long told BT Sport.

"We knew we were a good enough team, we knew we could play football, but it was not happening in the last few weeks.

"We went out there with the mentality of fighting hard for each other firstly and hoping the play comes from there.

"It was a good day all round, but we have got a hard game coming up in two days' time against West Ham."

Cuco Martina set Southampton on the path to victory with a sublime 25-yard opener with the outside of his boot.

It was the Curacaoan's first Premier League appearance since September, and Long praised the effort the 26-year-old put in to return to the starting line-up.

"He's been brilliant in training, working really hard and deserved his chance in the team," he added.

The statistic that suggests Van Gaal has built the WORST Man Utd side in 54 years!
Manchester United continue to struggle under Louis van Gaal, with Saturday's 2-0 defeat at Stoke City being their fourth in succession in all competitions.

It also marks a seventh game without victory and the Red Devils have won just three times in 14 fixtures since mid-October.

United's difficulties are reaching new lows by the week, with a series of notable statistics underlining their troubles as they look to get back on track in time to save the Dutchman's job.

The losses to Wolfsburg, Bournemouth, Norwich City and Stoke City in their last four matches make this the worst run by any United side in a single season since 1961.

Not since October through November 1961 have United suffered a four-game run in which they have failed to pick up even a single draw. It is a startling statistic, with only a stretch between May and August 2001 matching the last four games but that run straddled two seasons.

Perhaps inevitably, such a record has seen new lows reached in many other respects too. For a start, United's current return in front of goal being their worst in 26 years.

With an average of just 1.22 goals per game to their credit, they are in danger of dropping below their 1.21 mark of 1989-90. That ratio has been bettered in every season since the 1990s rolled around, but Van Gaal's side are showing few signs of improving in front of goal.

That, combined with their increasing issues in defence, provides a real problem for United. Their consecutive 2-1 defeats to Bournemouth and Norwich combined with the 2-0 loss at Stoke mark their first run of three successive two-goal concessions since September 2010.

United need to buck their act up in all departments if they are to start turning bad fortune into good.

Cristiano Ronaldo has been enjoying the winter break in typically stylish fashion, chilling out in Miami all week - though he looked a little flustered when ambushed by a Miami Heat mascot during a basketball game.

The Heat were taking on the Detroit Pistons in the NBA, with Ronaldo a guest of honour at the event - he met British basketball star Luol Deng before the match, and enjoyed a few snaps with the cheerleaders too.

The Portuguese superstar soon found himself on the receiving end of a big furry kiss, but it wasn't from one of the cheerleaders, unfortunately for Ronaldo!
Instead, the Real Madrid star was planted with a big sloppy kiss from the Miami Heat's frisky mascot Burnie, who also got a little too familiar with Ronaldo's entourage too.

As well as leaving the American Airlines Arena with some fur in his mouth, Ronaldo was also presented with a shirt with his name and number on the back - though he wouldn't need it, seeing as he has spent most of his time in Miami with his shirt off!

Ibrahimovic: I knew I would make history with PSG
Zlatan Ibrahimovic says he knew he would write himself into history when he joined Paris Saint-Germain in 2012.

Ibrahimovic was a €20 million signing from AC Milan and has scored over 120 goals in just under 150 appearances in all competitions in a period in which he has won three straight Ligue 1 titles.

PSG are currently unbeaten in the French top flight and sit 19 points clear at the top of the table after 19 games as they charge towards a fourth straight title.

And Ibrahimovic feels it is a sign of just how far the club has come in the last few years.

"I feel good. I feel I have a lot of responsibility," he told the official PSG website.

"Before I came here, I knew it would be a big challenge for me because the club wanted to do something great, something big, to build up a club and bring them to the top. It was a project at the start.

"I'm very happy I was here at the start because it's easy to come here now where everything is settled down, everything is good and it's easy to make it your thing.

"When I first arrived, it wasn't so easy because I came from AC Milan and PSG was a different world compared from what it is today.

"I'm very happy, I was one of the first ones to be here and bring it to the top and I knew I would make history with this club, so that is what I'm doing and I'm still doing it.

"When I change club or stop playing football, I will sit down and lean back and say I was part of that project, so for that I'm very happy."

PSG are in Qatar as part of a tour, during which they are set to play a friendly against Ibrahimovic's former club Inter.

"I've been to Qatar a couple of times and I find it very nice. We have had a good preparation every time we have been in Qatar," he said.

"It also brought luck because we have been winning trophies and we want to continue with this tradition, so we will be coming for Christmas time and play the friendly game against Inter.

"I'm happy to be there representing my team and I am happy for Qatar also that will welcome two big teams like Paris Saint-Germain and Inter, so it's good for the people there, so let us make them enjoy the game."

Man City rocked as Kompany hobbles off nine minutes after returning from injury
Manchester City have suffered an injury blow after Vincent Kompany was forced off with an injury just nine minutes after coming on as a substitute against Sunderland.

Kompany was making his first appearance since November 8, having already missed much of September and October, and his face as he exchanged a few words with Manuel Pellegrini before walking down the tunnel said it all.

The Belgian looked utterly dejected, surely a sign that it is a recurrence of his calf troubles.

He had been out of action since picking up another knock while on international duty with his country, and after starting Saturday's game on the bench it was clear Pellegrini was looking to ease him back into the fold.

But it appears the centre-back got injured almost as soon as he came on. Having struggled to control a pass in his own half he stretched to recover, but while he averted any threat to the City goal he may well have condemned himself to another spell on the sidelines.

Despite not limping initially and staying on the pitch for another seven or eight minutes, he was forced off for Martin Demichelis.

City have struggled defensively without their skipper this season, and Fabio Borini's goal before his introduction here means they are still to keep a clean sheet in his absence.

Manchester City have won the race to land Pep Guardiola after putting together a record-breaking wage packet that will make him the highest paid coach in history, according to Bild.

The salary of £18 million (€25m) per season will make Guardiola the best paid coach not just in football, but in any sport in the world.

In fact, Guardiola will also be the highest paid person at the club, with his salary far out-stripping the £220,000-a-week (£11.4m a year) picked up by Sergio Aguero and Yaya Toure.

Guardiola had also been linked with Manchester United, but the Red Devils and other suitors were blown out of the water by City's offer, who have finally got their man.

Matt Jarvis will make his loan move to Norwich City from West Ham permanent once the January transfer window opens, the Canaries have announced.

The winger has been on loan at Carrow Road this season from the Hammers., and has scored twice in seven appearances in all competitions for Alex Neil's side.

His displays have done enough to convince the Norwich hierarchy to sign the 29-year-old on a three-and-a-half-year contract after agreeing an undisclosed fee.

"I've really enjoyed my time here so far so I'm delighted to sign on the dotted line," Jarvis – who is currently sidelined with a knee injury – told the club's official website.

Wenger reveals Alexis injury setback
Arsenal's Arsene Wenger revealed his star forward Alexis Sanchez has suffered a setback in his recovery from a hamstring injury.

The former Barcelona star sustained his injury against Norwich last month but was given a slim chance of being fit enough to take some part in his side's top of the table clash against Manchester City on Monday evening, but was not even named in the matchday squad.

"Sanchez I think will be back around the 10th of January. He has had a slight setback two days ago. We had planned to put him on the bench tonight," Wenger said following his side's 2-1 victory over Manuel Pellegrini's side.

Arsenal cemented their place as Leicester City's nearest challengers with an impressive win over City which came courtesy of goals from Theo Walcott and Olivier Giroud.

Wenger's side will be without Alexis, however, for the Boxing Day trip to Southampton as well as upcoming home games against Bournemouth and Newcastle.

But last season's top goalscorer could be back in time for the game against Sunderland in the third round of the FA Cup, as the Gunners begin the defence of the trophy that have won two years in a row.

Blatter and Platini – what happened, why were they banned & what next for Fifa & Uefa?

GOAL COMMENT

It was the day that few thought would ever come - the day Sepp Blatter was banned from FIFA.

FIFA president Blatter, along with UEFA boss Michel Platini, the man who wanted to replace the Swiss as leader of world football, were both handed eight-year bans from all football-related activities after an ethics investigation.

Blatter, who has been in charge of FIFA since 1998 and won a fifth consecutive term in office earlier this year, has promised to fight the suspension after being found guilty of breaches surrounding a "disloyal payment" to Platini made in 2011.

FIFA's Ethics Committee said it had not found evidence that the payment, which was made at a time when Blatter was aiming for re-election, constituted a bribe but that it had lacked transparency and was a conflict of interest.

Platini, who has led UEFA since 2007, is also expected to appeal the decision.

WHAT HAPPENED ON MONDAY?

Blatter was banned for eight years from all football-related activities after being found guilty of making a "disloyal payment" of €2 million to Platini - a decision which he says was communicated to the media before he had been informed.

The 79-year-old, who won a fifth term in office back in June by defeating Jordan's Prince Ali Bin al-Hussein, has already revealed he will appeal against the decision of the FIFA Ethics Committee after claiming he feels "betrayed."

Blatter, who succeeded Joao Havelange as head of FIFA in 1998, held a press conference in the old FIFA building in Zurich where he protested his innocence, invoked the memory of Nelson Mandela and spoke about humanity.

In his press conference he said he had become a "punching ball" for the organisation but said he would fight against the decision and questioned the right of the Ethics Committee to suspend him.

Platini, who had hoped to replace Blatter in February as the new president of FIFA, is also expected to appeal.

Blatter was also fined €50,000 while Platini was hit with a punishment of €80,000.

WHY HAVE THEY BEEN BANNED?

The ban centres on a payment Blatter made to Platini in 2011. Both men claim the agreement to pay Platini was made in 1998 for work the Frenchman did during his time as technical advisor to Blatter between 1998 and 2002.

Suspicions became aroused when it was noted that the payment was actually received nine years later, in 2011. It was also not part of Platini's written contract - but both men said that they had made a verbal agreement which is legal under Swiss law.

FIFA's adjudicatory chamber, which is led by German judge Hans-Joachim Eckert, listened to the cases of both men last week although Platini declared he would not appear after claiming the result had already been determined.

According to the committee, "Mr Blatter, in his position as president of FIFA, authorised the payment to Mr Platini which had no legal basis in the written agreement signed between both officials on 25 August 1999. Neither in his written statement nor his personal hearing was Mr Blatter able to demonstrate another legal basis for this payment. His assertion of an oral agreement was determined as not convincing and was rejected by the chamber."

The judgement also stated that Blatter had demonstrated "an abusive execution of his position as president of FIFA" and accused him of "failing to place FIFA's interests first and abstain from doing anything which could be contrary to FIFA's interests."

Platini, according to the committee's findings, "failed to act with complete credibility and integrity, showing unawareness of the importance of his duties, concomitant obligations and responsibilities.”

WHAT NOW FOR BLATTER AND PLATINI?

Blatter was in bullish mood during his press conference, questioning the work of the Ethics Committee and insisting he will "fight for me and fight for FIFA."

He accused the Ethics Committee of labelling both him and Platini as liars and revealed that his family has been mocked over his plight.

But things could yet get worse for Blatter, who has been interviewed as part of a criminal investigation, with the Swiss Attorney General investigating the "disloyal payment" to Platini.

Platini, who rejects any allegations of wrongdoing, was spoken to as "someone between a witness and an accused person" under Swiss law.

Blatter has already said he will appeal the decision and could go to the FIFA appeals committee before heading to the Court for Arbitration for Sport (CAS).

If he fails in both of these courts, he could go to the highest court in Switzerland to prove his innocence and quash the ban.

Platini is likely to appeal his suspension at CAS with UEFA giving the Frenchman their full backing.

Neither man will be able to perform their roles while their appeals are pending.

That means UEFA will continue to be led by Angel Maria Villa Llona, the senior vice-president, until the final outcome is known.

In a statement, UEFA said it was "extremely disappointed" with the decision and supports Platini's right "to a due process and the opportunity to clear his name."

WHAT NOW FOR FIFA?

FIFA's presidential election will take place on February 26 with Sheikh Salman (above) the current favourite to land the top job.

Prince Ali will also fancy his chances along with Gianni Infantino, the man likely to be backed by UEFA with Platini seemingly unable to stand in the election.

But whoever wins will inherit an organisation in turmoil.

Apart from winning back the trust of the public and the watching world, which in itself may yet prove impossible, there are also a number of ongoing investigations into alleged corruption and wrongdoing within FIFA and member associations.

Blatter, the ultimate survivor, and Platini, who is desperate to clear his name, will not go quietly - this is a story which could yet run and run.

Argentine fans SPIT at Messi as Barcelona team-mates step in to defend him
Lionel Messi was spat at by angry River Plate fans as Barcelona made their way home from the Club World Cup final, with team-mates forced to hold back the Argentine star.

The 28-year-old, who has endured a rather fraught relationship with fans of la Albiceleste in recent years, had earlier scored in the 3-0 victory over River in the final in Yokohama to send his countrymen packing.

Barcelona were at Tokyo’s Narita airport ready to fly back to Spain with their latest trophy when the incident occurred at passport control, with a brief scuffle breaking out.

Reports suggest River fans began shouting abuse at Messi as the Barca team headed through the security gate, with one even spitting at the forward, who had to be held back by Javier Mascherano and manager Luis Enrique.

One of Messi’s best friends in the Barca squad, Luis Suarez, was also seen calming down Messi, who had tried to confront the angry fans.

The situation was cooled by a combination of Barcelona officials and the intervention of Mascherano and Luis Enrique, though it will have done little to improve Messi’s relationship with supporters from his home nation.

The fracas was witnessed by media and fans looking to take pictures with the Barca stars, while River directors who were nearby immediately condemned the behaviour of the fans to Argentine media.

Barcelona picked up their fifth trophy of the year with the comprehensive win over River on Sunday, with Messi opening the scoring before Luis Suarez netted twice more – the Uruguayan ended the tournament with five goals and the Golden Ball award.

The Catalan club do not play again until December 30, when they face Real Betis, and remain top of the Liga table after Atletico Madrid surprisingly lost 1-0 to Malaga.

Fabregas did not sabotage Mourinho - Nevin
Pat Nevin has called for harsh treatment of Cesc Fabregas by Chelsea fans to stop and denied that he claimed the Spaniard had said he would rather lose games with Jose Mourinho as manager.

Fabregas was jeered by the Chelsea fans during Saturday's 3-1 win over Sunderland after Nevin was saidto have outed him as one of the players who sabotaged former manager Mourinho.

Reports on Monday claimed that Fabregas was ready to take legal action against Nevin following his comments, but the 52-year-old has now insisted he was misunderstood and did not mean to wrong the former Arsenal star.

"When a story appeared in one of the newspapers it was reported as if I was deliberately outing Cesc," Nevin wrote in his weekly column on Chelsea's website.

"Now whether it was mischievous on the newspaper's part for deliberately misunderstanding me or whether I was not clear enough in what I was saying and the fault was thus partially mine, it doesn't matter.

"In short, I did not mean to have a go at Cesc in any way at all; I was merely asking a question.

"During an interview with BBC Radio 4 I asked if the player who said the phrase six weeks ago: 'I would rather lose than play for Jose,' had been outed in the press as Cesc? I absolutely wasn't having a go at Cesc, but asking the question, as the reporter I was talking to was the one who originally broke that story.

"I called the original Radio 4 reporter and he obligingly told me that it definitively was not Cesc who was the culprit.

"So, deep breath, when Cesc got a negative reaction as he was substituted on Saturday, if any of that was anything to do with what I was reported to have said, first I am sorry to Cesc, I absolutely didn't mean that at all, it was misconstrued, but nonetheless I apologise.

"Secondly, I plead with the fans they adapt that reaction for the upcoming games. Cesc has released a number of statements of late that have been brave, honest and self-deprecating. He has been badly wronged and he didn't deserve that on Saturday, full stop. I hope that is crystal clear."

Neville backs Van Gaal to succeed at United
Former Manchester United defender Phil Neville is confident under-fire manager Louis van Gaal can turn the club's fortunes around.

United are fifth in the Premier League following a run of six matches in all competitions without a win, while their Champions League and League Cup hopes are already over for this term.

Similar poor form hindered David Moyes when he succeeded Alex Ferguson for the 2013/14 season, with the Scot ultimately paying for that failure with his job before the campaign ended.

Neville had a first-hand view of his demise, serving as assistant manager to his former Everton boss, but he believes former Barcelona and Bayern Munich coach Van Gaal can find success amid intense speculation over his future.

"United are having a tough spell at the moment and they're finding it difficult," he told BreatheSport.
"But there's a long way to go, it's such a big club.

"I have total faith that Louis Van Gaal can, and will, bring success to Old Trafford."

Neville has been working as a coach at La Liga side Valencia since the start of this season and is now the number two to his brother Gary at the Mestalla, following the ex-Manchester United captain's appointment as head coach earlier this month.

"Me and Gary have a very clinical relationship. We both know what we want, we trust each other and we work really well together," said Phil, who retains ambitions of his own to be a number one in the future.

"At some stage I'd like to manage, that is the long-term aim," he added.

"However, I know that I've got a lot of time, so I see no need to rush. When I feel I've got the right experience and there is a job that I think suits me, I'll think about it.

"For now, I want to focus on doing a great job as a coach and an assistant here at Valencia."
